Orange County’s Future – Safe & Reliable Water

The Huntington Beach Desalination Facility is a cost-effective, environmentally sensitive solution to provide safe and reliable water supply to Orange County residents. At no cost to taxpayers, the facility will provide 50 million gallons of water per day (50 MGD) while using existing infrastructure to reduce construction costs – a major factor in making water affordable. The facility will ensure there is sufficient high quality water to meet demands and protect Southern California against the public health, security and economic consequences of water shortages – readily available in times of emergency.

Currently, most of Orange County is dependent on water from a few shared sources – the local groundwater basin, Sacramento Delta and the Colorado River. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Southern California has grown by one million people in the past three years and population is expected to grow by an additional 4.3 million people by the year 2020. Orange County alone will grow by an additional 500,000 people – placing an increased strain on our historical sources of water.

Southern California must step up conservation efforts and develop alternatives, including desalination facilities and water recycling. Desalination technology is a proven solution, with over 21,000 facilities worldwide.
