Orange County’s Future – Safe & Reliable Water
The Huntington Beach Desalination Facility is a cost-effective, environmentally sensitive solution to provide safe and reliable water supply to Orange County residents. At no cost to taxpayers, the facility will provide 50 million gallons of water per day (50 MGD) while using existing infrastructure to reduce construction costs – a major factor in making water affordable. The facility will ensure there is sufficient high quality water to meet demands and protect Southern California against the public health, security and economic consequences of water shortages – readily available in times of emergency.
Currently, most of Orange County is dependent on water from a few shared sources – the local groundwater basin, Sacramento Delta and the Colorado River. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, California had more than 37 million people as of 2010 and is expected to add about four million people between 2010 and 2020. Orange County alone will grow by an additional 350,000 people – placing an increased strain on our historical sources of water. 350,000 new residents is the equivalent of having a city the size of Anaheim added to Orange County over a ten-year period.
Southern California must step up conservation efforts and develop alternatives, including desalination facilities and water recycling. Desalination technology is a proven solution, with over 21,000 facilities worldwide.
The Huntington Beach Desalination Facility – built at no cost to taxpayers – will be located on the property adjacent to the AES Generating Station on Pacific Coast Highway at Newland Street in Huntington Beach, in accordance with the city-approved General Plan and the 1996 California Coastal Act.
